Playing with homemade paints

Join the ranks of the big time paint manufacturers with this activity for children. First, you'll be making homemade paint. Then you'll use your paint for all sorts of wonderful creations.

The kid activity:
Kids create paints from common kitchen staples, with parental supervision of course. Then they'll be using their paints any variety of art projects. Once the desired pictures are created, they are allowed to dry overnight. When the paint dries, the salt will reflect some light, making it appear luminous and shimmery!

Preparation:
You'll need to gather the following.

  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • Assorted food colorings

Simply mix the salt, water and flour together until combined. If creating colored paints, divide your mixture into parts and add a drop or two of food coloring to each part.

We suggest putting the mixed paint into an empty plastic ketchup or mustard bottle (the inexpensive soft ones) and squeezing the paint out. You could also put the paint into a plastic baggie and snip the end off.

YeahBaby.com thoughts:
Have fun with your children's creations and have your own art gallery show. The entire family can dress the part for this gala affair. Since it's fun and so easy to make, kids will be begging to do this activity over and over again!
